(This notice was first posted on August 7, 2002 and is being reposted on the server in time for the annual meeting.  We began business as a journal at that time when members were asked to submit articles for possible publication.)

If approved at the 2003 annual meeting, NCSA will launch the journal Sociation Today.  The first issue will feature refereed articles by Beth Davison, Mike Wise and Rebecca Adams.  In addition, there will be article reviews.  An article review is much like a book review, but will concentrate on important articles which stress modern research on core concepts for sociologists such as size, density or inequality.  While sponsored by the the North Carolina Sociological Association, articles need not concentrate on North Carolina or the South.

The goal of Sociation Today is not to replicate the standard journal article of 25 pages, with references going all the way back to Durkheim.  Rather, our model will be short articles with one or two tables which will be accessible to professionals, students and the general population.  A model for style can be found at http://www.ncsociology.org/beth9.htm
This article follows classic sociological arguments, but is easily read and the policy implications are of interest to all.  By appearing on the Web, students, faculty and the public can easily search it out.  People today seem to avoid going to the library, but are willing to spend hours searching for information on the Internet.

Sociation Today will be the first web-based sociological journal sponsored by a professional society.  At a time when established journals such as Science are facing challenges from the scientific community who wish to publish quickly with a refereed publication on the Web, we feel that Sociation Today will set the tone for future publishing in the social sciences.  Please feel free to submit articles to the editor, and please do look forward to our first issue.

Note: Our ISSN is provisional pending publication of the first issue. At that time, it will be listed the national and international databases of registered ISSN.
